Proposals to prepare for the 1950 meeting

Different groups organised themselves and started to think about which topics were to be discussed at the Nordic Summer University. These proposals were the input that was discussed in Lysebu, Norway, in 1950.

BERGEN:

 

1. Human dignity

 

I Humanity’s place in the universe

Its relation to nature

Its relation to the animals

Similarities to animals:

Physical – anatomy

Psychological – instincts, drives

Societal – family life, group formations

Development – phylogeny

2. Differences to animals:

Reason: The brain, central nervous system

Capacity for abstract thought – logics, mathematics

Creative capacity – technology, art

Religion – theological psychology, theological history

 

II Different views of human dignity

 

1. a) Ancient philosophy, b) Later Middle Ages, c) Newer philosophical thinking (materialism, psychology, existentialism, etc.)

2. a) The humanist view, b) The Christian view, c) Other religions’ views

3. Modern physics’ results and their influence on the perception of human dignity
